Matty de Vries was born in 1959 in Twijzelerheide, Friesland, the Netherlands. From 1986 – 1991 she studied at the Academy of Art Minerva in Groningen, the Netherlands (painting and illustration). Ever since she exhibited regularly in the Netherlands, in the USA (Los Angeles), in Belgium, in Spain, in England and Scotland and in Germany.
From 2000 – 2003 she took part in a travelling group exhibition ‘The Mare’s Tale’ in England and Scotland; from December – August 2004 she arranged a continuation at this exhibition in the Netherlands under the title “Een schaap met witte voetjes”.
In 2005 she travelled to Peru. This resulted in the project Ande(r)s, she made 25 altar pieces accompanied with a booklet. Her work has been reviewed in national art magazines (‘Kunstbeeld’ and ‘Kunstwerk’), in regional papers in the Netherlands and in international newspapers (USA, England, Germany). Her musical activities are singing and playing a.o. accordion. Her theatrical activities are performances for children and adults.
From 1997 she writes childrens’ stories and since 1999 poetry, from 2002 as well in Dutch as in the Frisian language. Writing in her mother’s language is like a discovering voyage to her. In her paintings colour and atmosphere are very important. Delicate, translucent layers and colours create a still atmosphere. Simplicity and directness are the starting points in her illustrations. Her theatrical activities are lighthearted. All these aspects can be found back in her graphic design and poetry.
